O Magnum Mysterium
For mixed Chorus
(2003)

This was commissioned by Hämäläis-Osakunnan Laulajat (HOL), a choir that has commissioned several works from me in the last few years. This short piece is part of a four-movement a cappella Christmas Cantata. HOL performs the work in this recording in Olaus Petri Church in Helsinki (2008). The original inspiration for this piece was James Kurtz's Medieval/Renaissance class at Juilliard. I took up composing this the summer after I took his class. It remained 97% finished for a couple of years, actually, and I finally completed it in my first few weeks in Finland. I coincidentally met Esko Kallio (conductor of the HOL choir) shortly thereafter and the rest is history.
