Three Pieces (2004)

play II.

In stark contrast to the first movement, this one is comprised of transparent harmony and very simple melodic material. In fact, I have always thought the most successful event in this work is in the contrast contained in the moment that stretches from the final bit of chaos at the end of the first movement and the first measure or two of this simple elegy (one needs to listen to them back to back without interruption to achieve that effect). The opening melodic material forms bookends around the ever-slower dreamlike middle section.
