Sonata (2000)

Sonata

This first piano sonata was written for my friend and colleague Brian Lee, who performs it in this recording at Carleton College in February of 2007 (you might also go and listen to Brian playing my--as Matt Whittall calls them--"evocatively titled" Three Pieces).

The sonata is in one movement, exploring various aspects of layered form, motivic development, etc., that greatly interested me in 2000 when it was written. I had been listening to a LOT of Scriabin and, having written two or three sets of short pieces in the years previous, wanted to write a continuous, uninterrupted flow of musical discourse.
